The stator surrounds the rotor and is usually equipped with magnetic field magnets, which are either electromagnets consisting of wire windings wound around a ferromagnetic core, or permanent magnets. These produce a magnetic field that passes through the rotor armature and exerts a force on the windings. The stator core consists of a number of thin metal sheets insulated from each other, called laminations. The laminations are used to reduce the energy loss that can result when solid cores are used. Resin-encapsulated electric motors used in washing machines and air conditioners use the damping properties of resin (plastic) to reduce noise and vibration. These electric motors encapsulate the stator in plastic.

The commutator is a rotating electrical switch that supplies current to the rotor. It periodically reverses the flow of current in the rotor winding as the shaft rotates. It consists of a cylinder consisting of a number of metal contact segments on the armature. Two or more electrical contacts called "brushes" are made of a soft conductive material such as carbon and are pressed onto the commutator. The brushes are in sliding contact with successive commutator plates as they rotate, providing current to the rotor. The windings on the rotor are connected to the commutator blades. The commutator periodically reverses the direction of the current in the rotor windings every half turn (180°), so that the torque applied to the rotor is always in the same direction. [54] Without this current reversal, the direction of torque on each rotor winding would be reversed every half turn, so the rotor would stop. Commutators are inefficient and commutation electric motors have mostly been replaced by brushless DC electric motors, permanent magnet electric motors and induction electric motors.
